The department of geography has been imparting quality research and teaching for over five decades and duly recognized as an institution of quality research and teaching. Established in 1960, the Department of Geography, Panjab University, has achieved a place of eminence in research and teaching. The Department of Geography, Panjab University is one of the country.s premier centres for Post Graduate studies in Geography. It offers opportunities for Ph.D., M.Phil, and Post Graduate Degree in Geography, Remote Sensing & GIS and Disaster Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. The department also offers online courses: M.Sc. in GIS (Geographic Information Systems and Science) and Diploma in Geoinformatics in collaboration with University of Salzburg, Austria.

The University Grants Commission has been gracious in recognizing all these activities of the Department. In its further recognition, the University Grants Commission covered the Department under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP). The activity commenced on February 21, 1992 and the department successfully completed three phases on 31st March 2009. The acquisition of the Special Assistance Programme (SAP), successful completion of its Phase I, II and III has proved a landmark in the history of the Department. It strengthened research and teaching; infrastructure; the academic interaction at national and international levels and helped to create a sound base for academic excellence. Considering the role played by the department in research and academics the UGC granted to the department the status of Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in Geography with effect from April 1, 2009.

Thrust Areas
The Department has consistently cultivated Population Geography as one of its major thrust areas since its inception. The Department also holds a place of pride for research in Agricultural Geography, Settlement Geography, Geography and Ecosystems and Remote Sensing and GIS- Applications. The Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Remote Sensing and G.I.S. started by the Department during Phase II of SAP has provided a distinct position to the Department in the country. Other areas of great research interest include: Urban Geography, Biogeography, Administrative Geography with a special focus on Geography and Public Policy, Regional Development, Geomorphology, Ecological Studies, and Political Geography. Research based teaching has been the forte in the Department. At present department have the following thrust areas:

  • Population geography
  • Agriculture Geography
  • Settlement Geography
  • Environment Geography and Remote Sensing
  • GIS Applications

Keeping in view the main thrust area of the Department, an Association of Population Geographers of India (APGI) was formed in 1978 with its headquarters at Chandigarh. The Association brings out a bi-annual journal Population Geography since 1979, which is devoted exclusively to research in Population Geography. This is the only journal in the country and among a few in the world with an exclusive focus on Population Geography.
